AKON TO DONATE ELECTRICITY

R&B singer Akon wants to give millions of African households and businesses electricity.
This will done through the AKON LIGHTING AFRICA INITIATIVE by developing a solar-powered solution that will be rolled out across the continent. The initiative was founded by the singer, political activist Thione Niang and entrepreneur Samba Bathily and was launched in February last year.

The Senegal born star says he believes it is better to give people of Africa resources to develop themselves and their economy and not foreign handouts.
Over 600 million people in Africa currently don't have access to power which delays economic growth and the contributes to high unemployment. According to the initiative, the project aims to empower people and help schools and businesses to stay open longer.

Projects will be rolled out in the following countries:
Mali, Niger, Senegal, Guinea (Conakry), Burkina Faso, Sierra Leone, Benin, Guinea Equatorial, Gabon, Republic of Congo, Namibia, Madagascar, Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa, Angola, Mozambique, Tanzania, Togo, Chad, Ivory Coast, Democratic Republic of Congo, Rwanda, Uganda and Botswana.
