Armed Robbers One Killed and One Arrested

November 28, 2015
A suspected hijacker was killed in a dramatic morning shootout with police officers in Chatsworth on Tuesday. Officers on patrol in the area, responding to a spate of hijackings in the last week, confronted the occupants of a suspicious looking vehicle.
In a hail of gunfire, one of the suspected hijackers was killed and another was arrested. Police spokesperson Major Thulani Zwane said the encounter between officers and gunmen took place shortly before sunrise. “Officers were conducting their operations to curb hijackings in their area this morning when they spotted a grey VW Polo vehicle driving at high speed on Sheridan Road. The occupants noticed the marked police vehicle following them and began firing at police,” he said.
“Police returned fire, fatally wounding one suspect. The second suspect was arrested and the third managed to flee the scene on foot after their vehicle crashed,” Zwane said. He added that it was later established that the car had been hijacked in Chatsworth.
“A firearm was also recovered from the scene and it will be taken for ballistic tests to establish if it was used in any other crimes in the province. Zwane said the arrested suspect, 27, will be charged for being in possession of property suspected to be stolen, possession of an unlicensed firearm and attempted murder. He will appear in the Chatsworth Magistrates Court soon.
“We believe that both men might be linked to other hijackings in the area,” he added.

When the shooting started, both Elsa and Patricia threw themselves over five-year-old Louis in a desperate attempt to shield him from the bullets.

'Esla Delplace and her mother Patricia died on Friday under a hail of bullets inside the Bataclan,' wrote Elsa's friend Sihem Souid, in a tribute for French magazine Le Point.

‘Her son Louis, her ray of sunshine, was with her. Louis was found in Vincennes hospital, distraught and covered in his mother’s blood as she tried to protect him from the bullets.

‘Elsa was a joyous person who always had a smile on her lips, even at difficult times. She was involved in the voluntary, cultural and artistic worlds. She played the cello brilliantly.

‘She always fought against injustice. I think it was part of her family – her Chilean mother fled the dictatorship of Pinochet.’

Louis was discovered as survivors were evacuated from the venue, covered in the blood of his mother and grandmother and sheltered by their bodies.

Some 89 people died in the Bataclan Theatre after gunmen fired into the crowd before detonating their suicide vests, as part of Friday night's attacks that left 129 people dead.

Gunmen also unleashed a hail of bullets on unsuspecting diners at several restaurants in the city, while three explosions hit the Stade de France football stadium.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister David Cameron said today that three Britons have been released from hospital following the Paris attacks and have returned to the UK, and 15 others are being supported for trauma by the Foreign Office and Red Cross.

Kombi crew beat passenger to Death

February 05, 2015
A Zanu PF supporter was yesterday allegedly beaten to death by a commuter bus crew after a change dispute.

What started as a good day for the Chibvunza family turned tragic when Tapiwa (28) was murdered while coming from the Harare International Airport to welcome President Robert Mugabe.

“Tainetsana nemahwindi tichiti takupai mari yenyu yakakwana pata hire kombi saka munofanira kutisiya kumba. Pavakaramba izvo takati saka chitipai imwe mari, ndipo vakavharira Tapiwa mumota ndokutanga kumurova (We had a dispute with touts, with us telling them that we had given them all their money for the hired kombi so they must drop as at our homes. They refused and when we demanded some money back, that is when they detained Tapiwa in their commuter bus and assaulted him,” said Tapiwa’s friend.

After the assault, Tapiwa’s body was allegedly dragged and dumped by the road side.

The Urban Transporters Association of Zimbabwe chairperson, Mr Wilbert Zhakata distanced itself from such criminal acts by people who are expected to know how to work with the public.

Meanwhile, Harare South legislator, Cde Shadreck Mashayamombe said it is high time the government seriously considers phasing out kombis.

“Dai makombi abviswa zvawo zvachose nekuti apedza vanhu (Commuter buses must be phased out for ood because they have claimed many lives,” he said.

Tapiwa leaves behind his wife, Mary Tsomondo and a 5-month old baby.

Burial arrangements will be announced in due course.ZBC
