A 13-month-old girl is thought to be among the worst injured after a car crashed onto a busy town centre pavement this morning.

Witnesses said the little girl and a two-year-old boy were thrown from their pushchairs when the VW, said to have been driven by a 92-year-old, mounted the curb in Guildford, Surrey.

The little girl and a man in his 60s were flown by separate air ambulances to St George's Hospital, south London and a woman with leg injuries was taken by road ambulance to the same hospital. All three are said to be in a serious condition.

Witnesses say the group was on the pavement when the car left the road and ploughed into them
  • A bystander, who saw the 13-month old baby girl being treated before she was put into the helicopter, said she had suffered 'very nasty' facial injuries.
'It looked like the poor little mite had been in a pushchair and was thrown out of it when the car hit it. I think she must have landed face-first on the pavement and that is why she had such serious injuries,' said the woman, who asked not to be named.

Four others - including the two-year-old boy - were taken to local hospitals in Surrey, where doctors had been put on alert. None of those victims was thought to be in a life-threatening condition.

It is believed the driver of the car was unhurt in the collision and did not need hospital treatment.

Some witnesses said the elderly driver of the car appeared to 'black out' before the crash, but another said she had been told the car suffered a fault.

Student Alejanero Mayol, 20, told the GetSurrey website: 'The car went on the pavement just in front of the shopping centre.

'It took out one pole and then crashed into three or four other people. They just flung up into the air after the car hit them.'

It is reported that three people were lying on the ground seriously injured when emergency services arrived
Owner of nearby Hire5 Menswear Prince Khurram rushed to the crash after hearing the smash.

He said: 'It looked like the car had travelled on the wrong side of the road. It's a one way street and it looks like it must have lost control and hit one of the bollards and knocked it clean out of the ground.

'The car was quite smashed on the front and it looked like an elderly couple in the car.'

A spokesman for Surrey Police confirmed: 'Surrey Police received a report of a collision in Guildford at 10.38am today.

'The collision took place in North Street, outside the main entrance to the Friary Centre.

'A silver VW Polo left the road and was involved in a collision with a number of pedestrians. Emergency services quickly attended and remain at the scene.

'Road closures are in place in the immediate vicinity and motorists and pedestrians are advised to avoid the area until further notice.'
