HARARE – Members of the Police Support Unit allegedly stormed a Zimdancehall birthday bash in Mbare on Sunday night and arrested 60 people after the event had exceeded the authorised 11pm limit.
DJ Malovers, who hosted the contentious gig that featured Zimdancehall stars, including Killer T and Lady Squanda, told the Daily News yesterday that the police descended on the gig at 12pm.
“We had the necessary police clearance which stated that the function was supposed to end at 11pm but we had exceeded by an hour. The Police Support Unit came in one of their trucks and started beating up people who were there.
“People started running in all directions but some were arrested. Sixty people were arrested and detained at Matapi Police Station around midnight on Sunday.
“The bash was taking place at Block 2 Matapi Hall. We had initially planned for about 500 people to come through but they came in their numbers, going up to 1 000. It eventually appeared like a Pasa Pasa street party,” said DJ Malovers.The DJ added that he escaped arrest because he was in his car when the police pounced on the revellers.
“I escaped arrest because I was seated in the car as people were pestering me for free entry.
“From my understanding the officers did not come from Matapi.
“But the people who were arrested were detained at Matapi Police Station where they were asked to pay a $20 fine each,” he said.
According to DJ Malovers, several upcoming artistes who included Bontoman, Tiksen and Quality were among those arrested.
He added that the police came in after Killer T had just finished performing.
Due to the police action, the country’s foremost female Zimdancehall artist Lady Squanda could not go on stage.
Efforts to get a comment from the police were however, fruitless.
National police spokesperson Senior Assistant Commissioner Charity Charamba, who is currently on leave, referred all questions to chief superintendent Paul Nyathi who did not answer his phone.
