The First Lady, Dr Grace Mugabe, says government and the city council should revert back to the old system of building and allocating houses to the city's residents and stop the further swindling of desperate home seekers by land barons.


Dr Mugabe was speaking at a Meet The People rally in Mbare, Harare on Thursday.

The First Lady began her address recalling the significant role played by Mbare suburb in the organisation of the struggle and launching of major assaults against the settler regime ,specifically the bombing of the shell fuel tanks in the Southerton industrial area, a blow that is said to have made Ian Smith shed tears.
Dr Mugabe spoke about the heroic acts of brave women like Mbuya Hwiza, who fed and gave shelter to guerrillas who were fighting the war of liberation and symbolic landmarks like Mai Musodzi Hall, where every national hero is made to lie in state before burial.



She said given that great significance of Mbare in national history, it is time some dilapidated structures were brought down and new houses built for the people.

She said Mbare needs some sprucing up to enable visitors and tourists to visit and familiarise themselves with origins of the country’s rich independence history, ordinary Zimbabweans’ life and souvenirs.

The First Lady also called on Mbare residents to respect the importance of their suburbs historical role and desist from selling out.

At the same occasion, Amai Mugabe reintroduced the legislator for the area, Tendai Savanhu, saying despite his suspension from the ruling party the people of Mbare should forgive him and continue to work amicably.
